A favourite food spot can make a new city feel a little more like home, especially when it becomes the place your uni mates keep coming back to. Sydney has plenty of them once the sun goes down.
Whether you're fresh off a study session, heading home from a part-time shift or just feeling peckish after a big day on campus, there's a late night feed with your name on it.
Here are 7 of the best late night eats for students, with real menu picks, honest prices and the nights each spot is open.
Use this quick guide to pick a spot, then keep scrolling for the full rundown on each.
Prices cover the dishes listed only, so drinks, extras and any surcharges are on top. Also keep in mind that food last orders can come before closing time.

Where to find it: 15 Goulburn Street, Haymarket. From Redfern, hop on a train to Central, then walk through Haymarket towards Goulburn Street.
Few things beat tearing into warm roti with your mates, and Mamak makes that easy on a Friday or Saturday night. It sits in the middle of Haymarket's buzz, and specialises in Malaysian cuisine.
Share a small plate to tide you over, or settle in for a proper dinner without blowing the budget.
If you're properly hungry, go for the Nasi Lemak ($15), a Malaysian comfort-food classic. You can add a curry or fried chicken for an extra $5. Noodle fan? The Mee goreng ($20) is the heartier choice.
The Roti canai ($11.50 for one) is a lighter bite that works well as a snack, though it might not fill everyone on its own. Still got room? Finish with the Roti pisang ($14) from the sweet menu.
Mamak is open until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights, then wraps up at 10pm on other nights. That makes it a weekend favourite rather than a Tuesday standby, so plan accordingly.

Where to find it: 20 Campbell Street, Haymarket. From Redfern, take a train to Central and walk north through Haymarket towards Campbell Street.
Some nights call for something warm, noodle-y and easy on the wallet, and that's where Chat Thai steps in.
The Thaitown branch has a dedicated supper menu, which is the late night menu to look for if you want a proper noodle fix after hours.
The BA MEE MHU DAENG ($10) and the MAMA JAY OH ($10) are the budget-friendly picks. Prefer something familiar? The PADT THAI ($16) never lets you down.
A $10 bowl is great value, but if you're running on empty after a big Saturday night, add a side or share a few dishes around the table. Or, if you're feeling fancy, the DTOM YUM GOONG ($32) comes with king prawns, and it's best ordered for the group to share rather than as a solo dinner.
Chat Thai Thaitown is open until 2am on Friday and Saturday, and until 10pm Sunday to Thursday. So if you're keen on a late supper, the weekend is your window.

Where to find it: 330D George Street, Sydney. Take a train from Redfern to Wynyard, use the George Street exit, then follow the venue's walking directions.
Not keen on juggling sharing plates? A handheld feed might be more your style. Jimmy's Falafel in the city has a Mediterranean-inspired menu advertised from 11pm, made for anyone who wants something filling they can eat on the go.
The takeaway prices for the late-night range are the same across two picks: The Original Pita ($22) and The Late Night Edition Wrap ($22).
The wrap is loaded with lamb kafta, sumac onions, tomato, Aleppo pepper and toum, so it's a flavour hit in every bite. Dine-in versions are $23. Got a sweet tooth? Add a Baklava ($7) to finish.
Jimmy's is open until midnight Monday to Wednesday, until 2am Thursday to Saturday, and closes at 11pm on Sunday. Since the late-night menu kicks in from 11pm, Monday to Saturday is when you'll want to go.

Where to find it: 66–70 Regent Street, Chippendale, near Central Station. From Redfern, take a train to Central, then walk towards Regent Street.
For late night cravings that call for Philly cheese steaks rather than another bowl of noodles, put Manny’s on your shortlist.
This American-style spot in Chippendale does cheesesteaks and pizza, so it’s a tasty change of pace from the Asian and Middle Eastern picks above. It’s quality late night food that won’t wreck your budget.
Start with the Philly Cheesesteak ($13.90 for a Reg, $18.90 for a Large), which comes with onion, green peppers and mushrooms.
Want more heat? The Jalapeno Cheesesteak is the same price and adds hot jalapeno peppers. Add the Original Fries ($6.50) to a Reg and you’re looking at $20.40, before drinks or extras. These are direct-order prices.
Manny’s is listed as open until midnight, hence you'll see many shift workers and night owls coming in.

Where to find it: 84–86 Mary Street, Surry Hills, on the other side of Central from Chinatown. Take a train from Redfern to Central, then walk to Mary Street.
Fancy an evening with a side of music? Step inside Goros, a Surry Hills bar serving Japanese snacks and charcoal-grill skewers, with cocktails if you want to make a night of it.
It’s an evening-only spot, so there’s no breakfast, lunch or morning trade here. Doors open at 4pm.
Try the Ten Yen Cheese Toastie ($12), a honey-and-chilli twist on a classic. And pair it with the 2pc Fried Onigiri ($10) and you’ve got a $22 snack order, before drinks or any surcharges.
Hungry for more? The Chicken Thigh skewers ($8 each, minimum two) come with tare sauce and sesame. This is a lighter feed, and plates add up fast, so discover your limit before ordering more!
Their kitchen opens only on Wednesday (until 11pm), Thursday until midnight, and Friday to Saturday until 2am. Its full menu is available until closing. Weekends can get packed, so arrive early.

Where to find it: 340 Riley Street, Surry Hills. From Redfern, take a train to Central, then walk into Surry Hills towards Riley Street. Check your return service before heading out.
Just finished your exams, celebrating a birthday, or just keen for a proper sit-down dinner with your mates? If a club sounds wrong for your kind of evening, make this Italian bar your treat-night stop instead.
Bar Conte calls itself a Negroni bar and Italian restaurant, so you can pair dinner with a classic cocktail and get a proper taste of Italy.
This is the splurge on our list, so go in with a plan. The king prawn pasta to try is the Busiate Gamberi ($44), made with prawns, spicy tomato sauce, bisque and ‘nduja crumb.
Share the Baked Tomino Cheese ($26) first, a rich starter with sage, smoked pancetta and truffle honey. Want something cheaper? The Gnocchi Al gorgonzola ($32) is the lower-priced pasta.
Two people each ordering the prawn pasta and splitting the cheese works out to about $57 each, before drinks. A 10% discretionary service fee applies to groups of six or more and all Saturday-night bills.
Bar Conte closes at midnight Thursday to Saturday, but dining guides list food last orders at 11.15pm. So, arrive early and reconfirm when you book.

Where to find it: 89 Parramatta Road, Camperdown. From Redfern, travel via Central, then take a Parramatta Road bus such as the 413 towards Camperdown and walk from the closest stop.
Craving comfort food with a little spice? Derrel's, on the edge of the Inner West, is the farther-out pick on this list. It isn't a quick stroll from Redfern, but the menu makes the trip worth it.
The Chip Putty ($10.50) is the one to try: chips and butter chicken gravy in a bun, and it's every bit as indulgent as it sounds. For a proper meal, the Chicken Kathi Roll ($18.50) is dinner in your hand, and the Tandoori Wings and curry ($15.50) are made for sharing.
The putty is more of a snack, so pair it with a roll or wings if dinner was a while ago. These are the standard listed prices, not app promotions.
Derrel's officially closes at 12am on Friday and Saturday, and 10pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.
